Blackwell 'Black Gold' Rum is distilled, blended and bottled by J.Wray & Nephew in Jamaica and is a blend of pot and column still, molasses-based rums. It carries no definitive age statement, "but it is not an 'old' rum, in order to stay true to the dark rum style."

The brainchild of namesake Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records and of the Island Outpost group of resorts, and advertising industry guru Richard Kirshenbaum. Born and raised in Jamaica, Chris can claim serious rum heritage as his mother's side of the family, the Lindo's, used to own J. Wray & Nephew and Appleton Estate.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 02/10/2018

Appearance:

Clear, coppery amber with polished bronze highlights.

Aroma:

Pungent tropical fruit/passion fruit, toffee and treacle with mocha coffee and roast almonds. A splash of water releases strong desiccated coconut.

Taste:

Woody, slightly bitter oak, toasty coconut and mocha coffee with toffee syrup and passion fruit.

Aftertaste:

Barbeque charcoal, dry lightly spiced oak and passion fruit. Lingering, bitter, burnt coffee-like charcoal and burnt toast.

Overall:

Very characterful Jamaican dark rum with distinctive oaky, coconut and mocha coffee flavours.
