Review

Discreetly located in the historic Huntley-Evans building, The Famous cocktail lounge opened in September in the LA suburb of Glendale. The entry corridor features a wall-sized photo of The Famous Department Store above a series of vintage photos of the area. Classic and cult films play on the large screens, while live bands and DJs amp up the energy on weekends and select nights. Most patrons drop into The Famous either before or after visiting the massive Americana at Brand shopping complex across the street.

While the locals aren't really cocktail geeks (yet), they've embraced barman Nick Vitulli's approachable drink menu, which includes classics like the Russian STD. Mule with housemade ginger and The Original French 75, made with cognac. One of the bestsellers is a nod to a bartender inside joke called the Grey Goose and Vodka, made with Beefeater Gin, grapefruit and lime juice, and agave nectar. The Vitulli is an aromatic standout, made with rye, Amaro Nonino, Fernet-Branca and sweet vermouth. Vitulli has also compiled a massive list of single malts, bourbons and ryes, eschewing the usual suspects for depth and education. A punch bowl menu is geared for after-work groups of ten or more.
