Launched in Las Vegas in May 2007, Right Gin is based on corn neutral spirit produced using a five-column process redistilled with eight botanicals: juniper, coriander, cardamom, lemon, bergamot, lime, bitter orange and Sarawak black pepper from Borneo.
These botanicals are distilled separately and blended by Swedish master blender, Heinrik Facile, we told “using water from Lake Bolmen in Malmo”.
The wide cylindrical clear glass bottle with its short neck resembles that used by Lord’s, Saffron and G’Vine. Right may share the same physique but it looks manlier, partly due to being slightly taller in stature, but mainly thanks to its black, medieval-style coat of arms resplendent with rearing stags, a double-headed eagle and crown. Below this is the Latin phrase, “credo Est unus modus verus”, meaning ‘there is a right way’. A black sash carrying the brand name diagonally dissects the crest, apparently a reference to ceremonial sashes worn by ambassadors and others in officialdom. Fancy that.
Right comes with some weighty linage as the company behind the brand, Altamar Ventures, was set up by W L Lyons Brown III of the Brown-Forman family who own the Jack Daniel’s empire. Lyons has boldly left the family fold to create his own spirit brands.
