The refill casks selected for this vintage whisky have allowed the natural characteristics of Highland Park to come through without too much influence from the cask. This bottling is un-chill-filtered and naturally coloured without the addition of caramel.
One of four ‘vintage edition’ whiskies (1998, 1994, 1990 and 1973) Highland Park released in April 2010 aimed at the travel retail/duty free market. The differences between the vintages lie in the extent to which first-fill or refill European and American sherry oak casks have been used.
The design on the front of the oak gift box draws on Orkney’s Norse heritage and complex woodcarvings in the characteristic ‘gripping beast’ style seen on the Oseberg ship, the oldest and most beautiful vessel of the Viking age.
Sampled on 16/06/2010
Clear, pale golden appearance.
Very lightly smoked nose of warm vanilla buttered fruit scone with hints of buttered corn-on-the-cob, spring forest vegetation after rain and very subtle cinnamon and coconut flesh.
Integrated palate is initially reminiscent of baked apple and citrus with subtle notes of dry burnt caramel and light smokiness.
Long, slightly sweet spicy cider wood, tobacco finish.
