There is no minimum age requirement for the term whiskey in the USA (only 'straight' rye whiskey must be aged for a minimum of two years) so don't be misled by the label's, "Stored in New Oak Less Than Four Years" - the key words here being "less than". However, Tuthilltown uses unusually small oak casks which affect the spirit's flavour more quickly and differently to full-size barrels.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 19/10/2014
Appearance:
(sample year: 13, batch: EZ, bottle: 365) Clear, deep coppery amber.
Aroma:
Newly sawn oak, nutmeg, cracked red pepper corns, nubuck leather, toasted brazil nuts, breakfast tea leaves, toffee apple and faint clove spice.
Taste:
Powerful dry oak, pencil shavings, roasted nuts, stewed apple, nutmeg, cinnamon, black pepper and clove.
Aftertaste:
Long lingering, toasted nuts and dry spicy newly sawn oak. Overall: Overly oaked but in a strangely appealing way.
