Originally created in 1962, Lillet Rouge is based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes. Like Lillet Blanc, this is aged in Yugoslav oak casks for a year before bottling. Between 1990 and 1993, Lillet Rouge was reformulated with higher-quality base wines to produce a more complex flavour.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 01/10/2020
Appearance:
Clear, burgundy red.
Aroma:
Mildly oaky Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wine notes jump out the glass with delicate quinine.
Taste:
Wine and oak tannins, and lightly bitter quinine beautiful dry rich grape fruitiness with subtle black pepper spice adding frisson.
Aftertaste:
Red wine tannins and leathery oak.
Overall:
If you like a fruit-led wine balanced by heavy tannins and fancy a tad more alcoholic kick then this is the aperitif for you. (And me!)
