alc./vol: 35%

Proof: 70°

Vintage: Non-vintage

Aged: No age statement

An Irish whiskey-based liqueur flavoured with heather, clover honey, and herbs, it is said to have been originally created at the Tullamore Distillery and purportedly based on a lost traditional Irish recipe for a 1000-year-old drink called heather wine.

The manuscript, which had been lost for 250 years, is said to have come back to Ireland in the 1940s. A good yarn, so it is.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 15/08/2011

Appearance:

Clear, Bright golden orange.

Aroma:

An aromatic, sweet smelling nose with overripe pineapple/overripe banana/tropical fruit confectionary, vanilla, slightly herbal aromas with a faint note of the whiskey base.

Taste:

Sweet honeyed, overripe banana and whiskey palate which belies its 35% alcohol strength. Vanilla, caramel and cherry flavours with light herbal spice.

Aftertaste:

Sweet, tropical fruity finish with bitter chocolate notes and which is saved from being cloying by peppery spice of the whiskey.

Overall:

Reminiscent of old-school Southern Comfort.
