The modern-day incarnation of the lime cordial created in 1867 by Lauchlin Rose, the owner of a shipyard in Leith, Scotland, who was importing limes from the West Indies to sell the juice to the British Navy.
Rose patented a process for preserving fruit juice without alcohol and so created the world's first concentrated fruit drink. To make his product more marketable, he sweetened the mixture, packaged it in an attractive bottle and named it 'Rose's Lime Cordial'.
