Aromatized wines

Words by Simon Difford

Aromatised wines ("aromatized" in American English) are based on wine fortified with spirit and flavoured with herbs, spices, fruit or other natural flavourings. According to EU law Council Regulation (EEC) No 1601/91, an aromatised wine must be at least 14.5% alc./vol. and not more than 22% alc./vol..

There is a very fine and somewhat misty line between what's categorised vermouth versus aromatized wine but the main difference, according to European law, is that vermouths must contain wormwood - although the species and quantity are not specified.
