Today was also the day of the Royal Proclamation of 1763, when George III decreed that a huge swathe of land in America that had been gained from the French, following the Seven Years War and the Treaty of Paris, had to be reserved for indigenous peoples and not be settled. So, in honor of this early recognition of indigenous sovereignty and self-determination, I made and drank a Royal Toast from the recipe on these pages. And quite tasty it was too!
