What coffee liqueur did you use? This cocktail's balance is very coffee liqueur-dependent. Your choice of coffee will also have some impact.

That makes sense, I used Kahlua which I assume (?) is seen as being quite sweet.

Yes, Kahlua is one of the sweetest coffee liqueurs and also has a low alcohol content compared to others.
