The ninth distillery to be built on Islay, planning consent was approved for third generation Scottish family-owned Hunter Laing & Company to build their £12 million Ardnahoe Distillery in September 2016. The distillery officially opened 12th April 2019.
Ardnahoe occupies a four-ace plot near Port Askaig on the island’s north east coast between Caol Ila and Bunnahabhain distilleries. It looks over the Sound of Islay and the Paps of Jura to the east, Mull and Colonsay to the north.
The distillery sources its water from the nearby Ardnahoe Loch to produce a classic peated spirit for maturation in ex-American bourbon barrels and ex-Spanish sherry casks. Initial production expected to be around 200,000 litres of alcohol per year.
A state-of-the-art building houses traditional distilling equipment including wooden washbacks, Scottish-made lamp glass-shaped stills and worm tub condensers. Interestingly, Ardnahoe is the only one if Islay’s nine distilleries to have worm tub condensers.
The distillery anticipates 20,000 visitors each year and its tour facilities have been built on one level to accommodate visitors of all abilities.
