Balmenach distillery lies in the Speyside whisky region within the Cairngorm National Park at the foot of the Haughs of Cromdale. The distillery is situated at the end of a road on a road which runs through the nearby village of Cromdale to one of the oldest crossing points of the River Spey. Ruins of an old castle stand on the hill of Tom Lethendry behind the distillery where in 1690 Jacobite soldiers took refuge after the battle of the Haughs of Cromdale.
