This petite semi-subterranean space may not, on first inspection, look that special: despite new burgundy tones on the walls, walnut panelling, plush leather upholstery and white tables imported from Casamania, Italy.
But Tonic has for years been a virtual social club for the rest of Edinburgh's bar industry. Off-duty barkeeps and other drinks professionals meet and make merry, courtesy of the able bar team and the extensive cocktail menu, the pages of which feature what must be the largest selection of classic cocktails in Scotland.
Bar folk aside, expect a younger crowd who are attracted by well-priced, tasty cocktails. The whirr of blenders still frequently fills the air here and long may that continue.
