Best described as a 'gastro bar' (as opposed to a 'gastro pub') this neighbourhood café bar offers a modern British menu and an equally good list of house cocktails, but most of all we are drawn to Whitehall by its warm atmosphere and friendly staff.
Whitehall's own website proclaims this café bar to be "inspired by the green gardens and train stations of London". The interior has an industrial feel with white factory tilled walls, exposed electrical conduit running across a partly stripped distressed wooden ceiling leading to industrial lamps with Edison filament bulbs. Park bench-like slatted seating (perhaps inspired by London's parks?) runs down the room with steel chairs and high bar stools. Tables on the sidewalk under an awning reinforce the café bar feel.
Many of the house drinks are listed with numbers instead of names: No.9 (mezcal, St. George Spiced Pear liqueur, lavender and lemon), No. 10 (Earl Grey infused gin,
Scotch whisky, tamarind and lime juice) and No.14 (vanilla bean infused bourbon, dark agave, fig and lemon).
Main courses such as 'Haibut with Persillade crust', 'Mongolian glazed pork belly' and 'risotto sugar peas and Maitake mushroom' don't sound particularly English to this Englishman but are tasty nonetheless.
