Made with Buffalo Trace's "Rye Mash #1" recipe, Eagle Rare 17-year-old is part of the Antique Collection released in small quantities once a year in July.

The Eagle Rare brand was launched in the 1975 and originally made at what is now the Four Roses Distillery, then named the Old Prentice Distillery. The distillery was owned by Seagrams who changed the name to Four Roses and in 1989 sold the Old Prentice name along with the Eagle Rare brand to the Sazerac Company, owners of the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 03/02/2016

Appearance:

(sample 2015 release) Clear, dark coppery amber with bronze highlights.

Aroma:

Toasty oak and roasted almond, golden syrup/treacle and maple syrup with floral lavender and violet notes.

Taste:

Big yet silky with leather, tobacco, vanilla and cinnamon spice. The faint floral notes on the nose continue. Benefits from the merest splash of water.

Aftertaste:

Spicy notes turn more curry-like (in a good way) with hints of fennel.

Overall:

Dry, leathery and toasty with nutty dry wood, vanilla, cinnamon spice and faint floral notes.
