Fritz Maytag, (yup that Maytag) Anchor's founder, set out to re-create a rye whiskey in the style of the very earliest American distillers. To achieve he used malted rye grain, distiled in a small copper pot still and aged for one year in toasted (not charred) casks.

The distillery which produces this rye whiskey is much better known for the brewery housed under the same roof, which makes Anchor Steam Beer.
