Light Gold Rums (1-3 year old, from molasses & column)

Light gold rum is a light-bodied style of rum produced from molasses and distilled primarily in column stills. Typically aged for one to three years in oak casks, these rums develop a pale golden hue and subtle complexity while retaining the clean, delicate character associated with column distillation.

During maturation, the rum acquires subtle notes of vanilla, light caramel, honey and soft oak, complementing the underlying sweetness and mild fruity character of the spirit. The relatively short ageing period ensures a smooth, approachable profile without the pronounced wood influence found in older rums.

Some light gold rums are charcoal filtered to soften their character, and this process can strip some of the natural colour from cask ageing. Colour alone isn't a reliable indicator of age, as caramel colouring may also be added to rum.

Rum should be a minimum of 40% alc./vol., and in the USA and other countries, legislation ensures this. However, in the UK and Europe, "rum" can be as low as 37.5% alc./vol. and sadly, rums in this category, such as Havana Club Original Añejo 3 Años, have dropped from 40% to 37.5% in a quest for price-led volume at the expense of previous quality statements.

In cocktails, light gold rum offers a versatile middle ground between white rum and more heavily aged styles. It adds subtle richness and depth without overpowering other ingredients, making it particularly well suited to Daiquiris, Mojitos, Cuba Libres and a wide range of tropical cocktails.
