Formally know as 'Appleton Estate Extra 12 Year Old' (renamed 2015), this medium-bodied rum is a blend of pot and column still rums aged between 12 and 18 years in ex-bourbon barrels with added toasted oak chips. Estate Extra was the personal creation of Wray & Nephew’s Chief Blender, Joy Spence.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 29/11/2015

Appearance:

Clear, deep coppery amber.

Aroma:

Pungent dried apricot, honey and freshly sawn oak with vanilla and linseed oil.

Taste:

Medium-bodied. A bed of dry spicy oak layered with gingerbread, honey, orange peel, almond, cinnamon, nutmeg, soy sauce and mocha coffee.

Aftertaste:

Dry and oaky with passion fruit, mocha coffee, orange zest and bitter tannins.

Overall:

Fabulous nose but perhaps a tad too much dry oak tannins on the palate and finish.
