Now produced by Pernod-Ricard in Thuir, South of France at the home of two other famous French aromatized wines, Dubonnet and Byrrh; Ambassadeur was originally owned by the Cusenier family.
The fortified grape juice, known as ‘mistelle’ is aged for in oak before other flavours are added by pumping the mistelle through percolators containing herbs, seeds, roots, barks and orange peel.
Reminiscent of sophisticated sangria with orange to the fore and a hint of Gentian (the bitter herb that grows wild in the Vosges Mountains) giving a refreshing hint of bitterness.
