A highly regarded thirteen year straight rye whiskey from the Buffalo Trace distillery in Kentucky, America.
Julian 'Pappy' Van Winkle, Sr. was a salesman working for W.L. Weller & Sons' wholesale division, who at the age of 33, with another Weller salesman, bought the company. In 1910 they bought the A. Ph. Stitzel Distillery in Louisville, Kentucky which supplied much of the whiskey sold by Weller.
Pappy did not approve of newfangled methods and put up a sign outside his office declaring 'no chemists allowed'. So it is perhaps a little ironic that the Stitzel-Weller firm was granted a licence to sell whiskey for medical purposes during Prohibition.
Pappy Van Winkle died in 1965 at the age of 89 and his image graces the label of Pappy Van Winkle bottles. Since 2002, the Van Winkle brands have been owned by and produced by the Sazerac Company at their Buffalo Trace Distillery as a joint venture with the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery company.
