Old J Spiced is a rum based spirit drink (it’s too weak to a rum) Inspired by the 18th century British Admiral who reduced the strength of the Navy’s daily tot of rum. Old J is flavoured with seven spices including vanilla with sugar and Persian lime.
On 21 August 1740 Admiral Vernon ordered that the daily half-pint tot of neat, high-proof rum issued to sailors on British ships be replaced with two servings of a one quarter of a pint, diluted 4:1 with water. He further dictated that lime juice and sugar were made available to add to this.
