When Pilsner Urquell was first brewed in 1842 by Bavarian brewmaster Josef Groll in the Bohemian town of Pilsen it was revolutionary. This is the world’s first clear, bottom-fermented beer. The name means ‘original source’ and was trademarked in 1898, by then already an international sensation.
The original ‘Pilsner’, Urquell is brewed with triple-decocted pale barley malt and locally grown Saaz hops using Pilsen’s soft water.
Sampled on 13/08/2012
(sample best before 23-Feb-13) Clear, deep golden with one finger white head which quickly fades to ring of foam and thin surface foam.
Sweet corn-on-the-cob with freshly baked baguette and light grassyness.
Clean and crisp, toasted baguette crust and cleansing herbal hops.
Dry and lightly bitter with a faint metallic note.
