Its makers say Papa’s Pilar Rum is inspired by Ernest Hemingway the writer and adventurer, known in Cuba as Papa. Pilar refers to Pilar in Key West where on 12th May 1934 Ernest Hemingway took delivery of a custom built Playboy Cruiser from Wheeler Shipyards in Brooklyn, New York.
A blend of rums produced from fermented molasses in the Caribbean, Central America and USA using continuous distillation. The rums are aged 3-7 years in ex-bourbon barrels and port wine casks before being blended in Florida using a solera aging and blending process. The blend is finished in casks previously seasoned with Spanish sherry.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 28/04/2013

Appearance:

Clear, pale straw yellow.

Aroma:

Vanilla toasty oak and cinnamon with caramel. Notes of citrus and peach fruit.

Taste:

Slightly sweet, vanilla icing and peachy fruit with cinnamon spice. Flavours strangely reminiscent of Southern Comfort liqueur.

Aftertaste:

Lingering fruity vanilla, buttery oak and black pepper spice. Perhaps more evocative of a vanilla spiced rum than a three year old light white.
