Jonathan Barbieri is an American-born artist who lives in Oaxaca and makes the Pierde Almas brand of mezcal with the Sanchez-family from San Baltazar Chichicapam. Jonathan makes this Espadín mezcal based gin with nine classical gin botanicals in a 100 litre pot still in batches of just 50 litres.

Named Pierde Almas +9 it is legally both a mezcal and a gin. Jonathan starts with double-distilled mezcal made Espadín agave and redistills this a third time with juniper, coriander, star anise, fennel, orange peel, cassia bark, angelica root, orris root, and nutmeg.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 21/07/2013

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Fur trees, pine cones, medicinal and delicately smoky with sage, celery salt, nutmeg and zesty citrus.

Taste:

Wonderfully soft in the mouth, especially considering the high alcohol with a delicate honeyed sweetness. Salty and smoky with peachy fruit, floral notes, herbal complexity and assertive yet soft spice.

Aftertaste:

Long dry mineral acidy with subtle smoky spice, honeysuckle blossom and fino sherry saltyness. This makes for one hell of an interesting Dry Martini.
