A limited release (2,000 magnums) cask strength bottling of Compass Box’s Peat Monster. Exactly the same blend of Islay and heavy peated Highland single malts as Compass Box’s standard strength and size bottling. bottled in February 2015 without chill filtration or added colour.
Review and Tasting
Sampled on 20/06/2015
Appearance:
Clear, pale golden amber.
Aroma:
Peat smoke, tar, iodine, buttered current buns, sea salt, cream-of-soda-vanilla and cumin spice. Baked apple and demerara sugar emerge with water.
Taste:
Smoky and spicy with earthy peat, tar, iodine and sweet apple juice (the cheap clear type). Lemony citrus and toasted nuts emerge with water. Surprisingly sweet throughout.
Aftertaste:
Long, big smoky finish with lingering iodine and spice.
Overall:
To quote Compass Box, “Yes, it’s big. Yes, it’s peaty. Yes, it’s smoky. But this is far from a one-dimensional monster.”
