Based on the brewery’s established Old Engine Oil black ale, head brewery Amy Cockburn was inspired to add fresh raspberries to a brew after visiting a neighbouring fruit farm. Brewed with Malted Barley, Roast Barley and Oats along with Galena, East Kent Goldings and Fuggles hops. IBU: 40
Sampled on 07/01/2016
(sample BBE May/2017) Clear but virtually opaque, deep brown – almost black, with a retentive beige head and spotted lacing.
Raspberry jam, toasty malt and mocha coffee.
Heavily roasted barley with notes of charcoal, sweet raspberry jam and light grassy hops.
More raspberry jam balanced by dry charcoal-like notes and mild hop bitterness.
Take a heavy traditional porter and add some fresh raspberry. The result is lighter and obviously fruity but retains its balance rather than becoming sweet and syrupy.
