A blend of 5 Speyside single malt whiskies from Pernod Ricard’s stable: Strathisla, Longmorn, Tormore, Alt’a’Bhainne and Braeval. Released in October 2016 as a tribute to the 5 generations of Chivas Regal’s Master Blenders since 1909, Ultis was blended by the fifth and present blender, Colin Scott.
Ultis is heralded as “the first blended malt Scotch whisky from the House of Chivas Regal.” Anyone remember the excellent Chivas Brother’s Century of Malts?
We have been lucky enough to sample the five component single malts in the Ultis Blend – each very tasty whiskies in their own right, and find ourselves in complete agreement with the official notes as to what each contributes:
• Strathisla (the spiritual home of Chivas Regal) – Malty and fruity with a subtle sweetness and faint saltiness
• Longmorn - creamy vanilla toffee
• Tormore - rich citrus orange with new leather
• Allt A’bhainne - full-bodied and spicy
• Braeval – Hoyed and floral with candied ginger
No age statements are given.

Clear, golden amber.
Heather honey, heather flavours, delicate cinnamon, nutmeg and clove spice, green apple and lavender. Faint ripe peach, roasted almond and toasted coconut flesh.
Cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and light clove add balance to honeyed sweet maltiness and vanilla fudge with underlying green apple fruitiness and cleansing zesty lemon.
Medium length honeyed malty finish with vanilla fudge and lingering cinnamon and nutmeg spice. Very faint creamy peach.
Although this is a vatted malt rather than Chivas Regal’s more usual blends with grain whisky, Ultis is recognisably in Chivas Regal’s house style with rich honeyed sweet maltiness and vanilla fudge. This is balanced by generous spice with a pleasing underlying fruitiness. Suitably regal packaging completes the offering and helps justify the £180 RRP launch price.
