Single de Samalens is made from the juice of a single variety of grape: Ugni Blanc but considering the name, confusingly is double distilled. The grapes used by Maison Samalens come exclusively from Bas Armagnac (mostly from the grand Bas Armagnac), on the border between the Gers and Landes.

Review and Tasting

Sampled before 1st May 2011

Appearance:

Clear, amber red.

Aroma:

Buttery, oily tobacco, new leather nose with vanilla, dried apple and sultanas with a slight whiff of almond oil.

Taste:

Sweet entry to the palate with vanilla, caramel and stewed apple/grapy notes. Palate perhaps lacks the promise of the nose.

Aftertaste:

Relatively short finish.
