Mavromatis distillery was established in 1965 and remains a family operated business specializing in distilling kumquat oranges to make this ‘Red’ kumquat liqueur and other kumquat flavoured syrups and liqueurs, which it sells in numerous different shaped bottles.

The company also produces ouzo and other liqueurs.

The kumquat originally comes from South Japan and China and literally translates to ‘golden fruit’. It was brought into Corfu in 1860 by the English agronomist Merlyn and today kumquat plants grow mainly in the north-western part of the island.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 03/01/2011

Appearance:

Bright orange in colour (like Lucozade).

Aroma:

Pronounced orange skin nose.

Taste:

Syrupy and a little overly sweet making this orange liqueur seem a little medicinal.

Aftertaste:

The finish of fresh orange zest is rather better. Lacks complexity.
