This non-alcoholic hydrosol spirit alternative is cleverly described as being "our free-spirit" and is "named after Los Caleños, the people of Cali, a Colombian City famed for its Salsa."

Made with an infusion of botanicals, including Golden Inca Berry (AKA Physalis peruviana or Cape Gooseberry), Coriander, Juniper berry, Green Cardamom, Sicilian Lemon. This infusion is distilled in stainless steel drums.

Recommended serve: 50ml Caleño with ice and tonic, garnished with a lemon zest twist.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 09/05/2019

Appearance:

Crystal clear.

Aroma:

Cardamom, zesty citrus, ginger and coriander.

Taste:

Bittersweet and dilute, yet complex and with slightly astringent citrus acidity.

Aftertaste:

Blueberry/raspberry-like fruitiness emerges in the finish.

Overall:

Distinctive and attractive colourful packaging and a wooden stopper points towards a luxury spirit, but in this case a “non-alcoholic free spirit”. It is not an unpleasant aperitif, but lacks body, dare we say alcohol. However, when mixed with tonic water, as recommended, Caleño does indeed make an enjoyable and refreshing long drink.
