Launched in summer 2010, WhistlePig straight rye whiskey is made from 100% rye and aged in new American oak barrels for a minimum of 10 years. It is distilled in Canada and hand-bottled at 100 proof at WhistlePig Farm, in the rolling hills of Vermont's Champlain Valley, close to the Canadian border.
Cultivation began at the WhistlePig Farm early in the 19th century in what was then known as the hamlet Shaksboro. The farm was purchased and renamed in 2006 by WhistlePig's flamboyant founder Raj Peter Bhakta who is restoring the old farm and establishing its distillery with a view to producing rye whiskey. Raj Peter Bhakta is a historian, businessman, TV personality and politician. In his political career, Bhakta won the Republican Party's endorsement for the United States House of Representatives in Pennsylvania's 13th congressional district in 2006. As part of his unconventional campaign highlighting the porous US/Mexico border control, Bhakta crossed the border along the Rio Grande river atop an elephant with a six-piece Mexican Mariachi band near a US Border Security checkpoint.

While WhistlePig 10-Year-Old Straight Rye Whiskey is merely bottled at WhistlePig Farm, the WhistlePig Distillery is now making its own whiskey under the capable watch of Master Distiller, David Pickerell, who previously served as the Master Distiller of Maker's Mark Distillery for 14 years from 1994 to 2008.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 15/08/2011

Appearance:

Clear, dark amber/burnished copped with golden highlights.

Aroma:

Hydrated to 43 per cent yields vivacious butterscotch and toffee, spicy with burst of vanilla, nutmeg, clove, ginger and carbolic soap-like aromas.

Taste:

Generously palate bursts with barbeque charcoal, cacao, spicy rye, toffee, vanilla and maple syrup.

Aftertaste:

Faint anise and eucalyptus flavours are more obvious in the long spicy, butterscotch and nutty toffee finish.
