Discerning Drinkers (1 rating)

Vintage: Non-vintage

Aged: Unaged

Product of: Product of United Kingdom United Kingdom

Flavoured with over 20 ingredients, including silver birch charcoal filtered “green fruit juices” [grapes, apple and lime] and steam distilled botanicals, this ‘adult non-alcoholic drink’ is named after two business partners uncovered in Britvic’s archives, Mr William Thomas and Mr William Evans.

During the 1880s they were inspired by the growing temperance movement and built a successful business making drinks to sell to pubs as non-alcoholic alternatives.

Containing a mere 99 calories per bottle, this product’s subtle sweetness comes from the fruit extracts used.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 23/08/2016

Appearance:

(sample bottle BBE May/17) Clear pale gold with a white head that quickly fades to a thin ring of foam around glass.

Aroma:

Aromatic and perfumed with green apple, apple blossom, lime zest and light crystallised ginger.

Taste:

Fairly subtle in flavour with a soft mouthfeel and low carbonation. Refreshing green apple and zesty lime with faint crystallised ginger flavour but not spice. More subtle botanical influences include notes of ginseng and dried wormwood blossom.

Aftertaste:

Lingering lime and crisp apple skin.

Overall:

As non-alcoholic carbonated drinks go, especially considering its mere 99 calories per bottle, T&E No.1 is excellent, offering temperance drinkers a refreshing alternative. Best summed up as being low in carbonation, dilute sparkling green apple juice with a hint of lime and subtle herbal complexity.
