Cork Dry Gin was first distilled in 1793 at the Watercourse Distillery, with the recipe transcribed in 1798 by apprentice distiller, William Coldwell. This now compounded gin is still made in Cork and popular in Ireland.

Production moved from the Watercourse Distillery to Midleton Distillery, County Cork in 1867 as a result of the Cork Distilleries Company amalgamation of five Cork distilleries. At Watercouse the gin's distillers had access to grain from the fields of East Cork with botanicals such as juniper berries, angelica root and citrus fruits, sourced via Cork's thriving international port.

In 1951, Cork's best-known artist, Gladys Leach, was commissioned to design a new Cork Dry Gin label. The key feature of her design was the use of the Cork Coat of Arms, reinforcing Cork Dry Gin's association with the city. (Gladys passed away peacefully 18/October/14.)

Production moved to Midleton Distillery, County Cork in 1867 as a result of the amalgamation of five Cork distilleries. Further amalgamation of the Irish Whiskey industry led to Cork Dry Gin being acquired by Pernod Ricard in June 1988. Pernod Ricard continue to make Cork Dry Gin, mainly for sale in the domestic Irish market where it is the leading gin brand.

Until recently the modern day bottle was embossed with C.D.C and carried the Cork Distilleries Company name. The present bottle is embossed with Cork Dry Gin but retains Gladys Leach's artwork and the legend, "Where Good Taste Prevails".

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 30/03/2013

Appearance:

Clear, transparent.

Aroma:

Tropical fruit and toasted bread – reminiscent of a bag of boiled sweets with little in the way of juniper.

Taste:

The peppery palate also has a touch of the tropics, accompanied by subdued juniper and barky botanical notes.

Aftertaste:

Juniper is more evident in the jagged finish.
