George Orwell wrote his famous 1984 novel in a remote farmhouse on the island of Jura to escape the distractions of London. So somewhat appropriately, in November 2014, the Jura Distillery released its 30 year old 1984 vintage limited edition with 1,984 individually numbered bottles.

The whisky was matured 30 years in a combination of American white oak, Amoroso and Apostoles oloroso sherry butt casks.

Review and Tasting

Appearance:

Clear, coppery golden amber.

Aroma:

Blackened fruit cake, oak cake, vanilla fudge and window putty with cinnamon, nutmeg and spice.

Taste:

Dry spicy oak balanced by honeyed nutty sherry with ginger spice, dried pineapple and morello cherry. A splash of water opens up this malt to reveal even more richness and fruit.

Aftertaste:

Long, heavily sherry influenced rich finish.
