On 31st December 2016, Lagavulin Distillery concluded its 200th anniversary year by announcing the release of this special single cask bottling comprising of 522 individually numbered bottles with all proceeds, exceeding £500,000, being donated to seven charities on Islay, Lagavulin’s home.

This exceptional 24 year old whisky was bottled from a single cask, number 6148, laid down in 1991. It will be incredibly desirable for whisky collectors and drinkers alike (we’ve tried it) and unusually it is being sold by ballot for a mere £1,494 a bottle – remember how collectable these rare historic bottles will be. Demand is bound to far outstrip the mere 520 bottles available (two bottles are being held back – see below) and those interested in purchasing a bottle should immediately register to be included in the ballot. The ballot, to take place on 12th February 2017, will be drawn and the bottles allocated at random.

Bottle No. 1, one of the two bottles being held back, will be auctioned separately (starting 26th February and closing 7th March 2017) to raise even more charitable funds, and the other bottle will be held in the Diageo Archive.

The proceeds from the sale of this very special and unique whisky will have a lasting legacy on Islay and will be donated as follows to fund projects on Islay:

£310,000 to Islay Heritage
Funding will enable research at Dunyvaig Castle, the creation of an Islay Heritage trail to help more people understand its rich history, conservation work focusing on Kildalton chapel and education.

£60,000 to McTaggart Cyber Café
Upgrade works to the fabric of the building including heating, new doors & windows and improvements to the Bistro Café area to allow for more activities for a wider range of people.

£60,000 to Islay & Jura Community Enterprises Limited McTaggart Leisure Centre
Fundamental works are required for the swimming baths to upgrade equipment and improve energy efficiency.

£60,000 to Finlaggan Trust
Refurbishment and modernisation of the existing visitor centre and development of the Finlaggan Bridge.

£20,000 to Islay Arts
To enable Islay Arts to increase the scope of events it funds.

£10,000 to Islay Festival Association
Funding to support the organisation to develop its events programme.

£60,000 to Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
RSPB is actively engaged in peat restoration on its estates on Islay at The Oa and Loch Gruinart. The funding will be used to fund peat restoration and conservation on the island.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 18/01/2017

Appearance:

Clear, deep golden amber with slight olive-hue.

Aroma:

Vanilla fudge, caramel and white chocolate with classic Lagavulin notes of peat, smoked salty fish and newsprint. Faint red apple and zesty orange, the latter more pronounced with water.

Taste:

Peaty with earthy smokiness, charcoal, salty seaweed and chocolate. Water amplifies smokiness, bready barley, chocolate, vanilla and creamy fudge.

Aftertaste:

Smoked vanilla fudge with attractive earthiness and charcoal.

Overall:

Brilliantly expressive, bold and yet with subtle nuances of flavour such as orange and chocolate. A not to be missed opportunity to acquire a very collectible bottle at a very attractive price while also giving to some very deserving Islay charities.
