This Croatian Maraschino is, says its maker's website, prepared according to a 16th century recipe from a pharmacist within a Dominican monastery. Its made from the distillate of Dalmatian marasca cherries. The brand, packaged in a straw-wrapped bottle, claims Napoleon favoured maraschino from Zadar
Sampled on 06/05/2014
Crystal clear
Cooked overripe cherries with vegetal tequila-like notes, dried banana chips, caramel shortbread, old leather and faint gammon ham.
Syrupy and sweet but with black pepper alcohol bite, more than its 32% alc./vol. might suggest. Fresh cherry skins and cooked cherry with cinnamon and faint toasted almond. Lacks the floral notes found in some other maraschinos but has an authentic cherry flavour.
Long lasting almondy finish, cherry skin with mild nutmeg, cinnamon spice.
