Founded in 1790 by John Ross, Balblair is the second oldest working distillery in Scotland. It lies in the Northern Highlands on the shores of the Dornoch Firth in the village of Edderton, which incidentally tales its name from the ancient settlement of Eadar Dun, meaning ‘between the forts’. The distillery sources its water from the Allt Dearg burn which flows from the hills where the said forts stood.

Distillery bottlings of Balblair single malt whisky are only available as vintage releases.

The standing stone featured on Balblair gift boxes lies within site of the distillery on. It was erected over four millennia ago by a race lost to history. The stone was much later, prior to the Roman conquest of Britain, inscribed by The Picts, a confederation of Celtic tribes who inhabited eastern and northern Scotland. They carved sacred symbols into the stone which survive to this day, a salmon and the double disc, thought to represent the sun’s two faces day and night.
