Single de Samalens is made from the juice of a single variety of grape: Ugni Blanc but considering the name, confusingly is double distilled. The grapes used by Maison Samalens come exclusively from Bas Armagnac (mostly from the grand Bas Armagnac), on the border between the Gers and Landes.

Review and Tasting

Sampled before 1st May 2011

Appearance:

Clear, deep amber/burnished copper.

Aroma:

Cedar wood, tobacco and cigar box notes dominate the nose with more subtle aromas of nutmeg spice, saffron, dry fruit (fresh fig and dried date) and vanilla.

Taste:

Slightly smoky woody palate retains some grape favours. Notes of dry cider, orange blossom honey and peppery spice.

Aftertaste:

Hot, mid-dry finish with oak, pepper heat and vanilla.
