The Speciale Belge of De Koninck is a beer widely known and enjoyed in its home city of Antwerp. Speciale Belge is top-fermenting ale brewed with Saaz hops and a mix of malts, without the addition of maize or brewing sugars. A stronger 8% version called Cuvée De Koninck is also produced.
Sampled on 13/01/2012
Clear, dark amber with small but long lasting head.
Fruity, lightly spiced caramel (ripe plum/blackcurrant boiled sweets/overripe banana).
Well-balanced malty palate with attractive slightly sweet fruitiness and well-judged hops.
Malty finish with lingering red berry fruit acididy.
