A Dortmunder style lager brewed from 100% by Sapporo. First brewed in Tokyo in 1890, the city's neighbourhood of Ebisu is named after this beer which was originally produced there. (The Y is silent when pronounced.) The brand was forgotten until resurrected in 1971 as Sapporo's 'premium' beer.

The beer itself is named after Ebisu (恵比須, 恵比寿, 夷) a Japanese Shinto deity who is known as 'The Laughing God', hence, as on this beer, he is often depicted with a broad smile holding a fishing rod and a large red bream.
