Said to be based on an old recipe handed down from Franciscan monks, Monasterium was discontinued in the mid-noughties. It was made at Distillerie Tuoni & Canepa in Tuscany from an infusion of Mediterranean citrus fruits and essential oils from flowers and herbs in neutral spirit.

Many consider this to be a copy of a German Klosterlikör, hence our categorisation.

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 25/06/2012

Appearance:

Clear, deep canary yellow with tinge of green.

Aroma:

Herbal nose with strong alcohol vapours. Génépi, peppermint, vanilla, lime cordial and orange sherbet.

Taste:

Sweet but balanced by a powerful wake of peppery alcohol. Medicinal herbal palate echos the nose with orange sherbet and lime cordial predominating, spiced with génépi, peppermint and vanilla.

Aftertaste:

Zesty orange sherbet with lingering génépi and black pepper spice.
