First brewed in 2015 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Maris Otter barley variety, and inspired by Beaujolais Nouveau Day, the first day that wine produced from Gamay grapes in France’s Beaujolais region.
Newly harvested grain is usually dried when it arrives at the maltings in preparation for long term storage, with steeping and then germination following at a much later stage. However, when the first batch of Maris Otter from the 2015 harvest arrived at Crisp Maltings it was stored undried until it broke its natural dormancy shortly after. It was then malted using a traditional floor malting process. This special “Otter Nouveau” malt was sent to Runaway Brewery in Manchester where Carl Heron, Crisp’s renowned brewing expert, and Runaway’s own Mark Welsby set about brewing this ale.
This 50th anniversary Otter Nouveau was brewed with 87.5% Maris Otter, 7% Wheat malt, and 5.5% Cara malt– all from Crisp Malting. Late hopping was carried out with Chinook, a high-alpha American variety, which contributed a grapefruit character.
Only 600 bottles of this very special bottle-conditioned golden ale were produced, most of which were enjoyed at the Maris Otter 50th Anniversary Festival in Norwich. In case you wondered, “Otter Nouveau Day” was 17th September 2015.
Sampled on 14/12/2015
Clear (but not bright with faint haze), pale golden with retentive off-white head.
Zesty grapefruit with white banquette crust.
Medium-bodied with assertive citrusy bitter hops over good white bread crust malt with white pepper spice.
Fades with more white bread crust, lingering zesty hop bitterness and faint white pepper.
Assertive citrus hop bitterness with white banquette crust maltiness and faint white pepper spice. As the brewing expert, Carl Heron, says, “Here’s to the next Otter Nouveau Day!”
