Unusually, Stauning distillery have their own maltings to produce the peated malted barley from which this Danish whisky is double distilled using traditional copper pot stills. It is matured in 200 litre first-fill ex. bourbon barrels at the distillery.
Sampled on 02/02/2016
(sample distilled 2011 and bottled 02/Dec/15) Clear, pale golden amber.
Light wafts of peaty smoke, cereal and mild spice with faint milk chocolate. Water amplifies bready cereal aromas.
Initially sweet cereal quickly dries as smoky, lightly peaty and spicy notes take over. Subtler corn-on-the-cob, chocolate, nougat and caramel. Benefits from a splash of water which integrates, sweetens and mellows.
Long, smoky, faintly salty finish with cinnamon and black pepper spice.
Youthful and exuberant but with pleasing bready cereal and smoky peat unimpeded by oak.
