Said to have been first created in 1525 by a young widow who posed as a model for Bernardino Luini, an artist from the Leonardo da Vinci's school of art. Luini used her as a model for his portrait of the Madonna which can still be viewed in the Chapel of Santa Maria delle Grazie, in Saronno Italy.

Disaronno Originale liqueur continues to be made in Saronno using only natural ingredients such as the pure essence of 17 selected herbs and fruits soaked in apricot kernel oil. Its amber hue is from caramelised sugar: no additives are used.

The production process uses special methods of extraction, soaking and low-pressure distillation contains.

Disaronno is recognisable around the world for its distinctive bottle and square stopper, developed in the late 1970s in the glass mill of a master craftsman from Murano, Italy.
