The name Mozart is well-known for high-end chocolate liqueurs, made by the Mozart Distillerie, established in 1954 in the town of Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 –1791) the famous composer.
For the past 30 years the family owned distillery has specialised in making liqueurs from a cocoa spirit made from two types of cocoa, Forastero and Trinitario. The cocoa beans are mixed with neutral alcohol and then stored for two months in barrels, during which time the cocoa forms a sediment which is removed to leave a clear cocoa macerate. This forms the base for Mozart liqueurs.
