Australia Day is the anniversary of the First Fleet of convict ships arriving at Sydney Cove in 1788. Today though, it's all about celebrating everything...
Australia Day has become quite controversial due to the highly conflicted and often violent relations between Europeans and indigenous peoples, many choosing not to “celebrate” it all. There is a growing movement to ‘change the date’ to one that is more inclusive, unfortunately a long succession of conservative and cynical political interests have stymied attempts in this direction. Hopefully time will be the ultimate healer.
