Angers is the capital of the Anjou wine region in France’s Loire Valley, but with an abundance of fruit grown locally, the city is equally noted for its liqueurs and is home to both Giffard and Cointreau.

The distilling firm of Cointreau was founded in 1849 by two brothers Adolphe and Edouard-Jean Cointreau, who were confectioners in Angers. On the same town square, Emile Giffard, a dispensing pharmacist, established his liqueur company in 1885. Both liqueur makers remained and grew in the city and are now located on either side of Anger, a mere 11 kilometres from each other.

Angers is one of France’s great historic cities with its castle, Château d'Angers, one of the largest medieval fortresses in Europe. Founded in the 9th century by the Counts of Anjou, the castle was expanded to its current size in the 13th century. The vast monument with its 17 towers hugs the banks of the River Maine and its grand buildings house antiquities, most famously the Apocalypse Tapestry.
