The brewery was founded in 1877 by Angelo Poretti and is one of the oldest in Italy. In 1939, ownership passed to the Bassetti family, who owned the Splügen brewery in Chiavenna. The Carlsberg Group acquired 50% of the company in 1982 and a further 25% in 1998, before taking over full ownership in 2002.
