Smooth Ambler take their Greenbrier Gin at 60% and age half the batch in virgin oak American barrels and the other half for in barrels previously used to age Old Scout bourbon. Smooth Ambler say this three month dual ageing process produces a gin that “sips like a gin and finishes like a whiskey.”

Review and Tasting

Sampled on 12/08/2013

Appearance:

Clear, pale straw golden.

Aroma:

Delightfully aromatic, orange marmalade boiling on the stove, dried tropical fruit, lemon meringue filling, hot-cross-buns dusted with cinnamon and warm clove spice.

Taste:

Bitter sweet, dry oak, tangy orange marmalade with lemon verbena and overtones of pine and camphor from the juniper. Spicy notes include candied ginger, hops, cinnamon and clove spice.

Aftertaste:

Buttery oak and pine with marmalade citrus and lingering spice. (The spicy oak masks the delicate notes seen in Smooth Ambler Greenbrier Gin. I’d love to try a three week aged rather than three months version of this.)
